Court is now in session...

Clergy members file into the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington for Sunday's Red Mass.

Yesterday was Red Mass Sunday at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington DC.  Today is the First Monday in October.  As national custom has it, this is the opening day of the Supreme Court.  Red Mass occurs the Sunday before the first Monday in October.  There are lots of major issues on the dockets, issues that might prove to be divisive, ranging from affirmative action, same-sex marriage, voting rights and abortion

Every court official, whether at the local, state or federal level is called to discern and impartially administer the truth in all cases presented before them.  Upon walking into the Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law at Campbell University, one is immediately greeted with one of my favorite scriptures, Micah 6:8.  “What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”

Beloved, now is and always will be praying times.  As believers and those that love to do justly and mercy while walking with God, we know that our prayers avail much.  Today, I lift up all attorneys, judges, magistrates, clerks of courts, paralegals and law students, as they continue to strive for justice and equality for all God’s people.

Book of Common Prayer # 21, page 821:  For Courts of Justice
Almighty God, who sittest in the throne judging right: We humbly beseech thee to bless the courts of justice and the magistrates in all this land; and give unto them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, that they may discern the truth, and impartially administer the law in the fear of thee alone; through him who shall come to be our Judge, thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Peace,
Karsten
